The breeding season is one of the most important stretches of the year. ThatPigeon follows the pairings, the clutches and the youngsters — from making the pair to ringing the young.
Create a pairing
- Open the Pairings tab and press New pairing (+).
- Choose the Cock from your own list (already filtered to cocks).
- Choose the Hen (filtered to hens).
- Fill in, if you want:
- Nest box — the nest box in the loft
- Season — the year (this year by default)
- Press Save.
The projected COI
Once both parents are chosen, ThatPigeon works out the projected coefficient of inbreeding for the young, from both parents' pedigrees across five generations. The badge is colour-coded:
- Green — low inbreeding (below 6.25%)
- Yellow — moderate (6.25–12.5%)
- Red — high (above 12.5%)
Check the COI before you save. If it is too high, another combination may be worth trying.
The pairing's page
Once saved, the pairing's page shows:
- the two parents' cards (tap either one for the full record)
- the nest box, the season, the start date
- the status: a green dot for an active pairing, or the date it ended
Add a clutch
On the pairing's page, scroll down to the clutches:
- Press Add clutch.
- Fill in the date laid and the number of eggs (usually 2).
- Press Save.
The clutch appears as a card with the date and the egg count.
Update the hatch
When the eggs hatch:
- Press Update hatched on that clutch.
- Choose how many hatched, from 0 up to the number of eggs.
Ring the youngsters
This is the step that ties everything together:
- On a clutch with hatched young, press Ring youngster.
- You land straight on the add-bird form, with Sire, Dam and Hatch date already filled in.
- Type the youngster's ring number, a name if you want one, and save.
The youngster appears in its parents' pedigree and in your bird list at once — with a complete bloodline from the first second.
Moving between seasons
At the top of the pairings screen there is a season switcher, arrows either side of the year. Move between 2025 and 2026 to compare how productive a pair was from one year to the next.
End a pairing
When the season is over, or the pair is not working:
- Press End pairing on its page.
- Confirm.
The pairing stays in your history — it is not deleted — and you can see it under that season whenever you like.
A tip
Record the clutches as they happen, not at the end of the season. Enter the eggs on the day they are laid and you have an accurate hatching calendar, and you can plan the ringing without relying on memory.
