Every race can carry a category saying what kind of distance it was. The category does not affect the results themselves, but it is essential to the RNC norms calculation.
The 8 categories
| Category | Type |
|---|---|
| Speed | Pure |
| Middle distance | Pure |
| Long distance | Pure |
| Marathon | Pure |
| Extreme | Pure |
| Speed/Middle | Hybrid |
| Middle/Long | Hybrid |
| Long/Marathon | Hybrid |
The pure categories explain themselves. The hybrids cover races on the boundary between two — a 350 km race, say, that is too long for pure speed and too short for pure middle distance.
Why it matters
RNC norms are calculated by category. A result on a race with no category enters no norm calculation at all. Setting the category is the first step to seeing any progress on a bird's page.
Setting the category
When you create the race
When you add a new race (Races → New race (+)), the Category field is in the form. Pick from the list, or leave it on None if you do not know yet.
On an existing race
- Open the race.
- Press the Category row in the details.
- Choose the right chip in the dialog.
The category saves instantly and the birds' norms recalculate at once.
Hybrids count towards both norms
A Speed/Middle result counts towards the Speed norm and towards the Middle distance norm. Likewise Middle/Long counts for both Middle and Long, and Long/Marathon for both Long and Marathon.
That is a real advantage: one hybrid race advances two norms at the same time.
How imports are mapped
Races imported from MyLoft arrive with the category already set. The mapping:
| In the MyLoft file | In ThatPigeon |
|---|---|
| Viteza | Speed |
| Demifond | Middle distance |
| Fond | Long distance |
| Maraton | Marathon |
| Extrem | Extreme |
| Demifond+Fond | Middle/Long |
| Mare fond | Marathon |
So "Demifond+Fond" in the export becomes the Middle/Long hybrid, and "Mare fond" maps to Marathon.
Races imported from Benzing files carry no category — it has to be set by hand after the import.
A tip
If you imported older races with no categories, open them one at a time and set the category. The norms recalculate instantly for every bird with a result on that race.
