The pedigree

The pedigree is the soul of a racing pigeon. ThatPigeon builds it for you out of the sire and dam links you set — there is nothing to draw by hand.

How it is built

When you add or edit a bird you have the Sire and Dam fields. Pick them from your own list. If the sire or dam is not in the app yet, add them first — the ring number alone is enough — and then link them.

Once a few generations are linked, open any bird's page and press Pedigree. The tree draws instantly.

Moving around the tree

  • Drag with your finger to move the tree sideways and up and down.
  • Pinch to zoom in and out, from 0.5× to 2.5×.
  • Double-tap to go back to the starting view: the root bird plus the first two generations.
  • Tap any ancestor to open its own page — you can go deeper without returning to the main list.

4 or 5 generations

In the top corner there is a 4 gen / 5 gen switch. Four generations show 30 ancestors (2 + 4 + 8 + 16); five show 62, adding another 32. Choose five when you want the full picture for an assessment or for a sale PDF.

The coefficient of inbreeding (COI)

In the top left corner a badge shows the COI percentage — Wright's coefficient of inbreeding, calculated over 4 or 5 generations depending on the switch; at pairing time, over 5. The colours:

  • Green (below 6.25%) — low inbreeding.
  • Yellow (6.25–12.5%) — moderate; look carefully.
  • Red (above 12.5%) — high; consider an outcross.

Tap the badge for a fuller explanation.

COI is useful at pairing time too: when you create a new pairing, ThatPigeon shows the projected COI of the young before you save, so you can decide with the number in front of you.

What each box shows

Every box in the tree carries:

  • the bird's Name (if it has one)
  • the Ring (in a monospaced font)
  • the plumage Color
  • the Breeder
  • the Pedigree notes (small, italic)
  • the status label — a "†" for a dead bird, or the status abbreviation (lost, sold and so on) in the top right corner

Boxes with no bird linked read "Unknown".

A tip

Fill the pedigree in from the top down: start with the bird, then the parents, then the grandparents. Even without every generation, the tree shows what you know and leaves the rest blank. The more you fill in, the more accurate the COI becomes.

When you are ready to share the tree, read the guide to the pedigree PDF and QR code.
